With a history of over 50 years, Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) is a provincial multi-discipline university, specializing in engineering. In 1984, Hubei Polytechnic University (the former name of Hubei University of Technology) was founded ---- as a result of the merge of the former Hubei Institute of Light Industry with the former Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery. HBUT, a key university which was founded and enjoys special attention from the Hubei Provincial Government, is recognized as “a leading and exemplary university in the Hubei Higher Education System”. In 1986, HBUT was authorized to grant Master’s Degrees. In 1998, HBUT successfully passed the undergraduate education appraisal conducted by the Ministry of Education, and in 2006 was assessed as “Level A” in the undergraduate teaching evaluation.

HBUT is now comprised of 14 schools (departments), offering 49 undergraduate programs, which cover different fields such as engineering, science, management, economics, and the liberal arts. Currently HBUT has an enrollment of over 18,000 full-time undergraduates and 1,350 full-time postgraduates. The university has 2,300 faculty members, of whom 1,100 are full-time tutors, with more than 170 full-time professors and 405 doctoral and master supervisors, 33 of whom are nominated on the name list of “National Elites Project”, “National Outstanding Elite Support Project”, “Hubei Provincial 111 Elite Project”, “Hubei Provincial New-Century High-level Elite Project”, and “Transcendent Discipline Leaders and Academic Backbones in Hubei”.
