Chinese Lantern Festival Celebration
This year the Chinese Lantern Festival was celebrated on the 6th, February, 2012. The CIRU hosted a special celebratory dinner to offer students, especially the high school students who are from DSG and ST. ANDREWS’ COLLAGE, a chance to learn more about the Chinese culture by partaking Chinese food traditionally eaten at this time.
Decorated with red lanterns, red Chinese knots, and red Chinese fans, the YELLOW HOUSE was immersed in a Chinese festival atmosphere, as the first full moon in the whole lunar year rose. The dinner started with a speech by Prof. Marius Vermaak, the director of the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University, who pointed out that the Chinese language is playing a crucial role in international communications, thus students who are able to speak Mandarin Chinese will find themselves in an advantageous position.

After the presentation, guests and students were offered Chinese food, such as Chinese noodles, rice balls, chicken, beef and spring rolls, and of course Yaunxiao sweep dumplings which is a special desert to celebrate the Lantern Festival. Everyone engaged in conversation with their friends or Chinese teachers whilst they were enjoying their food.
The boys from St Andrew's College were trying to use the chopsticks.
The evening was a great success and people enjoyed the Chinese food and the festive atmosphere. With such a good start, we wish for a fulfilling Dragon Year ahead.
