The New HSK Preparation, also known as HSK, or the Chinese Proficiency Test, is the national standardized test of Chinese as a foreign language, as recognized by the People’s Republic of China and numerous countries worldwide. Established in Beijing in 1988, the HSK is widely recognized as the most comprehensive of Chinese language proficiency tests.

HSK-Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi(New HSK Preparation) is an international Chinese proficiency written exam for non-native Chinese speakers (six levels) and HSKK-Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi is a standardized Chinese language oral test (Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels).  Applicants for Confucius Institute scholarships require a minimum score of 180 on the new HSK - Level 3 test and 60 on the HSKK - Elementary test.

 The HSK Internet-Based Test is authorized by Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters); it is a new form of test, technologically one step up from the original Paper-and-Pencil Test. It includes listening, writing, and oral segments. The test is distributed to test takers and answers are submitted electronically. 

 The New HSK Preparation allows test takers to have one more choice out of other test formats. It helps improve test takers' Chinese proficiency, as well as promote Chinese language in the information era and its application on Internet. 

 The Confucius Institute E-Learning Center was authorized by Hanban in April 2010; it is the very first Internet-Based test Center for the Chinese proficiency test. It takes on the New HSK Preparation as well as the construction of the web system.
