Learn Chinese Beer Brands

Have you ever been exposed to some currently famous beer brands in your Chinese learning. If your Chinese teachers talk about the favorite beverage of Chinese young people, they will probably mention Tsingtao Beer. Production and consumption of beer in China has occurred for around nine thousand years. Made with rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits, this beverage is fairly popular in Shang and Zhou dynasties, and was called Lao Li (醪醴) at that time. However, after the Han Dynasty, Chinese beer faded in the following hundreds of years. It was not until the end of 19th century when Russians established a brewery in Harbin that beer was introduced to China.

To learn Chinese beer brands, Tsingtao Beer should not be excluded. Tsingtao Beer is the best selling beer of China, followed by brands Zhujiang(珠江) and Yanjing(燕京). Tsingtao Beer is brewed in the city of Qingdao which was a German base in the time of unequal treaties and late-colonial western influence in China. It was long advertised as being "brewed with mineral water from the Laoshan Spring," which contributed to its characteristic flavor; however, this now applies only to beer produced in Qingdao, not to that produced in the company's other breweries. Originally, Tsingtao Beer was brewed in accordance with the German Reinheitsgebot ('Purity Law') of 1516, therefore the only ingredients that were used were water, barley, and hops. However, after privatization the recipe changed; like many other beers made in China, Tsingtao Beer contains a proportion of the less-expensive rice as an adjunct in the mash.
