Drinking Customs in Wedding

Wine has found its multi-purposes in China. Indispensable as it is in folk customs, it's absolutely a must in weddings, and almost every step in a wedding is related with wine. Xijiu (happy wine, namely, wedding feast) in Chinese even becomes a substitute of wedding, since attending a wedding feast is often referred to as attending a wedding.

It's a traditional etiquette in the process of a Chinese wedding. Usually two wine cups are tied together with colored knot such as the truelove knot, when the newlyweds will each drink a cup together or one by one. It's a very popular custom in China.

On the next day of wedding, the newlyweds shall return to the bride's family to have a visit. The bride's family, in return, shall hold a banquet called the "homecoming banquet" for lunch during which wine is served. After that the couples shall go home together.

As soon as the bridal procession arrives at the groom's family, the groom's parents will toast two full cups of "welcoming wine" to the procession. The visitors shall take the wines bottom up to show that they are one family now. The visitors will be feasted thrice after that. After the wedding, the procession may stay for the night in the groom's house and leave the other day if they live far away. Before seeing the procession off on its way, the groom's parents shall wait inside the door and toast the "send-off wine" to the honored guests.
