Top technological universities form alliance to meet global challenges

    SINGAPORE, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Seven of the worlds' top technological universities Tuesday gathered here to create an alliance to enhance academic exchanges and make better use of technologies to meet global challenges.

    The alliance, named the Global Alliance of Technological Universities, groups top universities including California institute of Technology and Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States, Imperial College London and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Europe, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Nanyang Technological University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Asia.

    The network will adopt an interdisciplinary and cross-boundary approach to address the issues of global concern by developing avenues for solutions through research collaboration and exchange.

    Grand challenges facing the world today identified by the alliance include biomedicine and health care, sustainability and global environmental changes, security of energy, water and food supplies, security and changing demographics and population.

    "The member institutions are linked by a belief that technology can make a difference in providing solutions to world problems, and by a desire to be active participants in the development of those solutions for the betterment of mankind," said Su Guaning, president of Nanyang Technological University and chairman of the alliance at the launching ceremony.
