Tibet Remains among World's Best Environments

With the pressure of fast economic development on environmental protection, Tibet has complied with the rules of "Developing with Protection While Protecting with Exploitation," and as a result, this region has remained one of the world's best environments.

According to a survey, the water, air, sound, soil, radiation and ecological environment in Tibet have all stayed in good condition, said Jiang Bai, deputy director of the environmental protection of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Tibet, known as the planet's "Third Pole," is located at 4,000 meters above sea level on average, where the ecological environment is relatively fragile and sensitive. In this wide area, there are natural lakes and rivers formed by glacial action, some of which then flow through other provinces and even abroad to the South Asia. Therefore, Tibet is also called the "Water Tower of Asia" and the "Climate Regulator of the World."

The majority of the forests, rivers, lakes, meadows, wet ands, glaciers, snowbergs and wildlife in Tibet have all remained under good protection, Jiang Bai says. In addition, most bodies of water in the region have been untamed and unaffected by human beings.

In the past five years, Tibet has invested more than 10 billion yuan in ecological protection and construction. It is reported that the Tibet Environmental Protection Bureau has established special funds in natural forest protection and returning farmland to forests.
